Thursday Movie Picks #65: Halloween Edition - Villainous Children

This week over at Wandering Through the Shelves the topic is Evil Children.  So after missing out on last week here is my list of movies that I have seen that I liked with Evil Children.

First up is Stephen King's Children of the Corn.  This classic features a couple who get stranded in a small Nebraska town, where it turns out all of the adults have been killed by the kids of the town and now they are after the couple who have shown up in town looking for help.

Next up is The Good Son, starring Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood.  In this movie Elijah Wood goes to spend some time at his cousins house only to realize there is something not quite right about his cousin.  This was quite a different character for Macaulay Culkin after his Home Alone movies.

Finally my last pick is Sinister.  This was a great horror movie that my wife didn't want to finish.  It features a Ethan Hawke as a writer investigating a murder of a family where the daughter has disappeared and assumed to be kidnapped by the killers.  Don't want to spoil anything if you haven't seen this but know it does within the category.

  1. The Good Son is getting picked ALOT.

Awesome choice with Sinister, those home videos were terrifying, particularly that lawn mover one. My reaction was similar to Ethan's, haha.

    1. Sinister was pretty gruesome, my wife made me stop it and I had to finish it the next day without her. I want to see the second one, not sure if we be able to get her to see it, although was able to get her to finish Sinister after a bit of convincing.

  2. I really enjoyed King's Children of the Corn story but didn't think much of the movie. I remember when The Good Son came out and it was such a huge thing that Culkin was playing evil but I thought his performance was flat and he weakened the picture. Never heard of Sinister but it sounds like it fits perfectly. Good picks.

I am not much of a horror fan at all so two of my picks lean much more towards suspense and my third features a kid that doesn't need eerie settings to be rotten she just is a terrible person.

The Other (1972)-Eerie chiller about identical twins Niles and Holland Perry and a string of "accidents" that befall their family tied to a game they play. Can the game be stopped? Filled with moody dread and excellent acting from the entire cast.

The Children's Hour (1961)-Two young women friends, Karen and Martha (Audrey Hepburn & Shirley MacLaine), run an elite girl’s school with the assistance of Martha’s aunt. One of the girls is a vicious, cruel bully who when she is disciplined for tormenting the other children spreads a lie that ultimately devastates the lives of all involved. Based on a Lillian Hellman play that was considered scandalous in its day. Miriam Hopkins who plays the selfish aunt in this starred in the original watered down, but still good, film version in the 30’s called These Three in the role Shirley MacLaine plays here.

The Innocents (1961)-Deborah Kerr stars as a governess in Victorian England who becomes convinced that the unnerving children in her charge are possessed by evil spirits and sets out to help them. Superb rendition of Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw with a brilliant, award worthy performance by Kerr.

  4. The Good Son is everywhere. I have never seen Children of the Corn but sounds scary but the scariest, to me, is the last one just from that image alone
